Cloud Computing

Cloud technology is a computing architecture in which IT resources and capabilities are provided as a service allowing users to access to services in the cloud without knowledge or control over the technologies behind it. Users can use applications, storage or computing power without having to known how these work internally.

As example Google Apps provides business applications that are accessed from a web browser, while the software and data are stored on several data centres around the world.

Distributed Computing

The main objective of grid computing is to manage, allocate and virtualize distributed physical resources (as CPU, memory, storage, networking) to applications and users as needed on-demand in order to solve a large problem dividing it into smaller slices and having multiple networked computers process the slices.

As example LHC Computing Grid (LCG) based on Linux has been developed to support the experiments using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, where huge amounts of data and process rates of several gigabytes per second are required.

High Performance Computing (HPC)

Today High Performance Computing is based on a cluster system architecture that forms the classical supercomputer system. HPC combines computer architecture, networking, parallel algorithms and software development in order to archive teraflops cycle process on specific tasks.

As example the European Weather Forecast Centre uses an 64 AMD Opteron(TM) 2.2 GHz processors, 128 GB of memory with InfiniBand high-speed interconnects Linux cluster to generate 10-day weather forecasts for the 25 European States.
