IT Infrastrucure : monitoring, virtualizing and clustering network services

Linux enterprise services nagios linux server

Monitoring with Nagios

Nagios is the industry-standard in IT infrastructure monitoring. It provides enterprise-class Open Source monitoring of hosts, services, applications, etc . The installation on a linux server is very easy because the code is provided in RPM format and administration can be made in a web-based or CLI form.

The main advantage of Nagios is that it has a huge list of pluggings developed by thousands of developers around the world, so everything that can be monitored has a plugging for Nagios with no license !!!

Linux enterprise services virtual linux server

Virtualization with KVM

KVM (for Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is a full virtualization solution for Linux on x86 hardware containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V). Using KVM, one can run multiple virtual machines running unmodified Linux or Windows images. Each virtual machine has private virtualized hardware: a network card, disk, graphics adapter, etc.

The code is provided in RPM format so installation on linux server is trivial and no paid for license is required !!!

Linux enterprise services cluster linux server

Service Redundancy with Cluster Suite

The Cluster Suite is a collection of technologies working together to provide data integrity and the ability to maintain application availability in the event of a failure. Administrators can deploy enterprise cluster solutions using a combination of hardware redundancy along with the failover and load-balancing technologies in Cluster Suite.

The use of Cluster Suite with Virtualization can provide linux server services redundancy without paying any license !!!

Linux enterprise services storage server

Storage

Linux supports the use of redundant arrays of disks (RAID) to improve disk data performance and provide data redundancy on a linux server. RAID can be handled either by the operating system software or it may be implemented via a purpose built RAID disk controller card without having to configure the operating system at all.

For large infrastructure Direct, NAS & SAN Attached Storage systems with SCSI, Fibre Channel, SAS, and iSCSI interfaces are also supported.

For clustering solutions Linux supports Global File System (GFS) : a shared disk file system used for by the nodes that form the Linux cluster.

Linux enterprise services database linux server

Databases with mysql

MySQL is a relational database management system that runs as a server providing multi-user access to a number of databases. MySQL works on many different system platforms, including Linux. The MySQL development project has made its source code available under the terms of the GNU General Public License, so no license must be paid to use it on a linux server.

Actually more than 6 million of databases installations are using mysql.
